The Indian textile industry is one of the largest in the world with a large unmatched raw material base and manufacturing strength across the value chain. It is the 2nd largest producer of MMF Fibre after China. India is the 6th largest exporter of Textiles & Apparel in the world. India’s textiles and clothing industry is one of the mainstays of the national economy. The share of textile and apparel (T&A) including handicrafts in India’s total exports stands at a significant 11.8% in 2019- 20. India has a share of 5% of the global trade in textiles and apparel. The uniqueness of the industry lies in its strength both in the hand-woven sector as well as in the capital intensive mill sector.

The report gives insights into the textile and garment industry in India and data of its economic development.

Ethiopia is a promising country for the future of apparel manufacture, looking at its youthful population of 110 million, its rapid development with an anticipated continued annual GDP growth rate of 8%, low labour costs and preferential conditions in trade with the U.S. and the EU. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the textile and garment sector is growing and so is its export.
However, the country also offers challenges, both commercial and in terms of environmental sustainability and ethical business behaviour. Cotton, fabrics and accessories need to be imported. Import/export regulations are complicated and time consuming. Workers are relatively untrained and unskilled and efficiency is very low. In addition, there is worry among stakeholders and (potential) buyers about issues such as living wage and the freedom of association in Ethiopia.
The overall objective of the report is to describe the comparative benefits and risks (SCP and commercial) of sourcing textile garments from Ethiopia. The aim is to inform potential buyers of the current status of the industry; it does not aim for scientific precision.

The authors study how firms respond to import competition by increasing the speed of trade. We use data on all Portuguese textile and clothing exporters’ monthly transactions and exploit the exogenous increase in competition following the removal of Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) quotas on Chinese exports. The removal of quotas is associated with an increase in the price and frequency of export transactions and with a reduction in average distance of firms’ exports. We rationalize our findings with a heterogeneous-firm model of exporting where firms decide which markets to serve as well as the frequency of transactions and the quality of exported products in each market. In response to low-wage competition, the more productive firms increase exports of high-quality products to nearby markets, while the less productive firms drop out from distant and low-income markets. These changes in export patterns imply that advanced economies become more specialized in “fast-fashion” — exporting higher quality products to closer markets at higher frequency.
