Kurzbeschreibung:
In the wee hours of the morning on January 31, in the worst tannery disaster in the industry's history in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a deluge of toxic sludge from a storage tank killed nine sleeping workers and a watchman. The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association said the tank explosion was due to poor construction and they are demanding 10 lakh rupees (US$16,200) compensation for the victims.
For those less familiar with the tanning industry, this photo-essay provides an overall picture of the tanning process in India, in which workers turn cowhides into leather ready for making purses, coats, shoes, and other products.
To the east, in Bangladesh, the leather tanning business has many similarities. There, too, workers and the surrounding communities face major health risks as a result of the tanneries. A powerful video published by Aljazeera last week takes a look at the industry:

Kurzbeschreibung:
The garment industry contributes 16.63% to the foreign earnings of India and it employs over 3.5 million workers. There are five different garment production hubs in India, all specialize in different types of garment production. Bangalore is one of the centres of production of garment and has somewhere around 1200 big, small and medium sized garment factories. Workers employed in this sector in Bangalore are nearly five hundred thousand.
With the phasing out of the Multi Fibre Agreement (MFA) in 2005 the world garment industry was put on one platform where the countries had to compete with each other to grab business. On the one hand work pressure has been constantly rising while on the other working conditions in the factories are going from bad to worse. While the garment industry is one of the biggest sources of export1, with considerable and rapid increase in growth (much of it over the last four decades), there has been a corresponding race to the bottom insofar as labour standards and wages are concerned.

Kurzbeschreibung:
In May 2011, the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) and the India Committee of the Netherlands (ICN) published the report ‘Captured by Cotton – Exploited Dalit girls produce garments in India for European and US markets’. The report uncovered troubling evidence thatproducts for big garment brands and retailers were being made by girls under exploitative working conditions in Tamil Nadu, South India.
Currently, SOMO and ICN are working on a follow-up report, which is scheduled for publication in mid-April 2012. New field research has been conducted, including interviews with nearly 200 women workers. The new report examines the current situation at the four garment manufacturers originally investigated for Captured by Cotton. SOMO and ICN look at what the industry promised to undertake to curb labour abuses following the first report, what has actually been achieved, and to what effect. In advance of the forthcoming report, this fact sheet highlights some of the preliminary findings and recommendations.

Kurzbeschreibung:
This report highlights several labour rights violations faced by girls and young women employed under the Sumangali Scheme in the Tamil Nadu garment industry. The Sumangali Scheme equals bonded labour, on the basis of the fact that employers are unilaterally holding back part of the workers’ wages until three or more years of work have been completed. In addition, workers are severely restricted in their freedom of movement and privacy. Workers work in unsafe and unhealthy circumstances. Local and international NGOs have reported extensively on the Sumangali Scheme. Inevitably, brands and retailers sourcing from Tamil Nadu have Sumangali workers in their supply chain. ICN and SOMO denounce the Sumangali Scheme as outright unacceptable and are of the opinion that sourcing companies have a responsibility to ensure that workers’ rights are respected throughout their supply chain.

Kurzbeschreibung:
Cotton is the world’s most important non-food agricultural commodity, yet it is responsible for the release of US$ billions of chemical pesticides each year, within which at least US$ million are considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organisation. Cotton accounts for % of global insecticide releases more than any other single crop. Almost kilogram of hazardous pesticides is applied for every hectare under cotton. Between and % of agricultural workers worldwide suffer from acute pesticide poisoning with at least million requiring hospitalization each year, according to a report prepared jointly for the FAO, UNEP and
WHO. These figures equate to between 25 million and 77 million agricultural workers worldwide.
Acute symptoms of pesticide poisoning include headaches, vomiting, tremors, lack of coordination, difficulty breathing or respiratory depression, loss of consciousness, seizures and death. Chronic effects of long-term pesticide exposure include impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depression and confusion
