Kurzbeschreibung:
Servitization is a growing phenomenon to improve resource efficiency, leading to positive effects for the environmental and for society. It stands for the innovation of an organization’s capabilities and processes to create mutual value through a shift from selling products to selling product service systems. In this context, product-service systems are one of the most effective instruments to attain a resource-efficient circular economy. It combines design principles, technology considerations, and marketing strategies into a business model for extending the useful life of a garment. In particular, the economic implications and feasibility will be assessed for such a business model, taking into account crucial factors, such as logistics flow, quality factors, key performance indicators (societal, environmental, economic), life-cycle discussions and the required competence-building.
This report demonstrates an economic feasibility assessment, by examining two examples of servitization for circularity in the apparel and fashion industry, and outlining potential business models, along with prospects for future research. Core elements for decision-making and the economic implications and feasibility of extending the useful life of a garment through servitization are identified here.

Kurzbeschreibung:
This study conducts the role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and supporting policy measures in driving a circular economy for textiles in Europe.
Given the EU’s commitment to a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (relative to 1990) by 2030, the long-term vision of a climate-neutral EU by 2050, and the significant greenhouse gas impacts of EU textile consumption, the forthcoming Textiles Strategy will need to be ambitious.
EPR should be a core component of the Textiles Strategy, as it will be an essential element in the move towards a European Circular Economy for textiles. It is a key mechanism by which the polluter pays principle, enshrined in Article 191(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), can be operationalised. Through EPR, end-of-life costs will be borne by producers, rather than, as is typically the case, by municipalities, and by extension, citizens.

Kurzbeschreibung:
This study confirms the significant economic and environmental potential of circular business models. It provides an overview of the potential of models that have grown significantly (resale, rental, repair and remaking) as well as, crucially, outlining the key actions that businesses, supported by policymakers, can take to capture their full potential. While this study does not address them directly, the social implications of a circular economy transition are vital to consider; academia and organisations including BSR and Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF) have already begun to do so.

Kurzbeschreibung:
Over the past few decades, the production and consumption of clothing has increased exponentially, leading to a dramatic increase in the negative environmental consequences produced by the fashion industry. Given the rising pace of global warming and the rising concern about the fashion industry’s contribution to the climate crisis and its exploitative social dimensions, decision makers, politicians and government officials have begun to promote sustainable fashion through public policy. This article reviews the main barriers facing a circular economy in general and the fashion industry in particular. It considers nascent regulations emerging throughout the world in the field of sustainable fashion, applying circular economic principles to the fashion industry.
Four categories of policy proposals are evaluated: Command and Control Interventions, Educational Initiatives, Incentives and Certification, grading them according to criteria of effectiveness, sustainability, feasibility, equity and compliance. The ranking process was based on an elicitation of expert judgement among a panel with expertise in the areas of sustainable fashion from the business sector, academia and civil society. Findings suggest that while some policy options appear to meet all criteria successfully, when selecting an optimal strategy for promoting sustainable fashion, there are frequently trade-offs between different alternatives.

The findings of this study can be used as evidence base to improve the knowledge of the effectiveness of recycling capabilities of textile waste. This study wants to substantiate the understanding of the existing technologies industrially applied or at research stage, which relate to all the different types of recycling (e.g. mechanical recycling, chemical monomer recycling, chemical polymer recycling, etc.). It also provides an analysis of the economic and environmental effectiveness of those recycling technologies and a roadmap of the textile recycling technologies under development in order to support their industrial uptake.
Finally, it also provides an analysis on relevant policy initiatives in order to tackle potential regulatory barriers and scale up textile waste recycling activities in the EU.

Kurzbeschreibung:
From a European consumption perspective, textiles have on average the fourth highest negative life cycle impacts on the environment and climate change – after food, housing and mobility. A shift to a circular textiles production and consumption system with longer use, reuse and recycling can contribute to reducing those impacts, along with reductions in overall consumption. One important measure is circular design of textiles to improve product durability, repairability and recyclability, and to ensure the uptake of secondary raw materials in new products.
The aim of this report is to contribute to the implementation of the EU Strategy for Textiles and the EU Sustainable Product Initiative through an improved understanding of the environmental impacts from textiles from a European perspective and identify design principles and measures to increase circularity in textiles.

Kurzbeschreibung:
Despite significant challenges in the fashion industry over the past few years due to Covid-19, we are encouraged by the number of brands using next-gen materials in their products. The number of fashion, automotive, and home goods brands interested in next-gen materials has increased along with the supply of next-gen materials. This market trend is not surprising given the increased consumer demand for animal-free and environmentally friendly products and the development of new technologies allowing for significant improvement in the aesthetics and performance of next-gen materials.
In this report, we explain three reasons brands are adding next-gen materials into their supply chains. First, and perhaps most importantly, is increased consumer demand for sustainable and animal-free products. Other reasons are the environmental benefit of next-gen materials over animal-based materials, including the continued animal cruelty when animals are used as commodities.
The majority of the report provides examples of products made from next-gen materials. Before now, there was no one source that listed how brands are working with next-gen materials and material companies.

Kurzbeschreibung:

Kurzbeschreibung:
In the garment and textile industry, circularity is rapidly gaining momentum given its environmental benefits, commercial promise, and rising consumer interest. Clothing resale, for example, is expected to grow 11 times faster than traditional retail by 2025.
The industry, which employs an estimated 60-70 million people in its value chain, must now grapple with the following questions: how will circular fashion impact job opportunities and job quality? And how can we ensure that the transition to a circular fashion system is just, fair, and inclusive?
The KWIL team investigated the job impacts of a shift to circularity, using foresight methodologies to account for macro forces reshaping the industry, such as automation and climate disruption. The research focused on the US, Europe, and India and included the following workstreams: Primary and Secondary Research, Economic Modelling and Scenario Planning.
