Kurzbeschreibung:

Climate change, population growth, and shortages of key resources are already affecting the industry and they will bring profound changes over the next 15 years. By 2025 there are expected to be another billion people living on this planet and twice as many elderly people. Climate change will have major impacts on agriculture and patterns of global land use. Many communities will change radically, affecting the needs of the industry’s customers and the availability of labour. Demand for energy, water and food will grow, prices are likely to rise, and control of resources will be a key political issue. Other factors will shape our world in less predictable ways. China, India and other emerging economies will change global patterns of trade and power and exercise a growing cultural influence. Technology will continue to transform our lives and businesses and create new opportunities – think of the impact the internet has had in the last 15 years. People’s attitudes to resource shortages, climate change and sustainability, and their levels of disposable income, will affect consumer demand. How governments act, or fail to act, on trade, economics, the environment and poverty, and how they coordinate action on these and other global issues will also have a huge impact. They cover a wide range of issues and pose some searching questions: The future is likely to be dramatically different from today. We have created four scenarios, exploring the challenges ahead for the fashion industry and its current business models.

  • How will the industry react to shortages of cotton and other raw materials?
  • How could the fashion workforce be affected by shifting supply chains and technological development?
  • How might technology influence fashion and change the way it is produced and sold?
  • How will people care for their clothes in a future of water shortages and high energy prices?
  • How could reuse and remanufacturing of clothing develop as a response to higher demand and prices?

The four scenarios explore worlds where globalisation has progressed or gone into reverse and where society and its fashions change more rapidly than today.

Consumer Survey Report

Herausgeber_in: Fashion Revolution

Kurzbeschreibung:

Fashion Revolution commissioned a survey of 5,000 people aged 16-75 in the five largest European markets, including Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain, to find out how supply chain transparency and sustainability impacts EU consumers’ purchasing decisions when shopping for clothing, accessories and shoes. We wanted to find out what information consumers would like fashion brands to share when it comes to social and environmental impacts and to better understand what roles consumers think that governments and laws should play in ensuring clothing is sustainably produced.

Kurzbeschreibung:
The clothing and textile industry offers style and functionality. It sells dreams and provides a stage for self-expression. But the industry produces an environmental impact which is far from sustainable. Looking at the environmental challenges in this sector, WWF is asking: How will fashion brands fulfil customers’ dreams in the future while contributing to the well-being of society and the environment at large? Doing ‘business as usual’ will not be an option for the industry nor for the planet in the long run. To stay financially successful, companies will find it necessary to reduce their environmental impact and to respect the ecological boundaries of our planet. WWF’s vision is that the clothing and textile industry contributes to a world in which humans live in harmony with nature. There is a long way to go to make this vision come true, but WWF believes it to be possible, if the industry takes bold action and leadership for transformation. This report shows how frontrunners are improving the environmental performance of their value chain, and how they are adopting innovative business models which could reduce the sector’s impact on the environment drastically. These innovations, in combination with disruptive global mega-trends such as digitalization, indicate that the clothing and textile industry is at the brink of radical transformation. It is time to use these transformative dynamics to create a radically different and more sustainable clothing and textile industry.

Kurzbeschreibung:
Fast fashion is a clothing supply chain model that is intended to respond quickly to the latest fashion trends by frequently updating the clothing products available in stores. The shift towards fast fashion leads to shorter practical service lives for garments. Collaborative consumption is an alternative way of doing business to the conventional model of ownership-based consumption, and one that can potentially reduce the environmental impacts of fashion by prolonging the practical service life of clothes. In this study, we used life cycle assessment to explore the environmental performance of clothing libraries, as one of the possible ways in which collaborative consumption can be implemented, and compared the advantages and disadvantages in relation to conventional business models. Furthermore, the key factors influencing the environmental impact of clothing libraries were investigated. We based our assessment on three key popular garments that are stocked in clothing libraries: jeans, T-shirts and dresses. The results showed the benefits of implementing clothing libraries associated with the garments’ prolonged service lives. Therefore to achieve environmental gains, it is important to substantially increase garment service life. Moreover, the results quantitatively demonstrated the potential risk of problem shifting: increased customer transportation can completely offset the benefits gained from reduced production. This highlighted the need to account for the logistics when implementing collaborative consumption business models.

Kurzbeschreibung:
The purpose of this study is to critically examine, in the context of the Fast-Fashion industry, the relevance of Eco-Fashion on young consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of the brands, in order to disclose the relationships between Eco-fashion strategies and customers’ brand loyalty – or consumers’ purchase intentions. The research design reckons on a mono method, based on a quantitative online survey conducted among 216 targeted respondents from four age groups and two different countries (China – UK). The findings reveal that, although fast-fashion consumers still lack of knowledge about the negative impacts of this industry, Eco-fashion strategies are playing a increasingly important role in fast-fashion consumption. Besides, the growing significance of sustainability in the fast-fashion industry has impacted consumers’ attitudes towards the brands, thus influencing their customers’ loyalty and purchase decision-making. Academically, the value and originality of the research relies on the newness of the thematic, since so far only few studies have focused on exploring the relationship between Eco-fashion and the Fast-fashion consumers’ perspectives of the brands. On the contrary, in the business field, Fast-Fashion retailers -in order to earn long-term profit have realized the importance of developing and implementing strategies aimed at exploiting the potentialities of the above-mentioned relationship. Therefore, this study has relevance also in terms of managerial implications for Fast-fashion retailers, since it gives some suggestions that can help the latters to achieve economic profit.
